In the modern world of theatre, we are all used to the formalities of the staged play. The professionally-lit stage and the auditorium. The hushed audience and the choreographed curtain calls. But centuries ago, theatre was a more raucous affair. Plays were often performed in public spaces. – village greens, town squares, grand courtyards – and the line between audience and players (as actors were known) was blurred. Performers frequently had to contend with drunken hecklers, and it was common for audiences to call out their reactions to the on-stage drama. The Lord Chamberlain’s Men, the acting company to which playwright William Shakespeare belonged during the reign of Queen Elizabeth, performed initially in boozy “inn-yards” before their establishment at the Globe Theatre. With “High Spirits”, we want to take theatre back to those drunken origins, setting our scene in a bar, and removing the formal stage. Our audience is not silent, but part of the action, experiencing the highs and lows of the drama with the actors. Tonight – under the neon lights – with your glass full and your favourite songs in the air, you will witness “High Spirits”, a drama celebrating the one-year anniversary of Project Wine. Join us at the bar, join in the drama, and enjoy a drink. Together we are taking theatre back to the people!
